Jumpman Forever on the Ouya. If you've never seen an Ouya micro-console before, look to the right side of the screen, just left of the XBox 360 - that itty-bitty thing is an Ouya. It's cheap, and it runs fairly well. The important part, of course, is that it's running Jumpman Forever. Did I mention that already? ;-)

I’ve been trying to get Jumpman Forever running on the Ouya for a bit over two weeks now.  Sheesh.  That ended up being a pain, the likes of which I never suspected.

But, there’s some serious satisfaction going on here for me:  I sat down and played it over and over.

There’s two pieces of satisfaction involved here.  First, I’ve got it working.  That’s been a long, screwed up battle.  Second, it means I’m much, much closer to fulfilling the requirements of shipping a beta for the Free The Games Fund.  Third, I’m playing it with a game controller, something that’s much more fitting for the game style.  I had been playing it on a keyboard, which works just fine, but, the original was played on a standard game controller, and nothing beats playing that way.  (It should be noted that a player can either use the joystick on the controller, or the D-pad on the controller to play.  The D-pad is great for people from the NES / SNES gaming era.)

Fourth, well… I’m playing one of my games on a console.  Sure, it’s a micro-console, but a console none the less.  See, I started out playing games on the Atari-2600.  There’s a piece of my brain that still says that “real games are on consoles.”  Doesn’t matter that for most game styles I prefer the keyboard and mouse to a controller, and love touch interfaces for some of the new style games on iOS and Android.  So, this is one of my T-Shirts I’ve always wanted since I was a kid:  write and ship a game for consoles. 🙂

It’s still not done and over with yet – there’s plenty of testing, and for some reason it’s polling changes to the axis portion of the controller a little too quickly (which means sometimes it drops moves on the D-pad), and I still have more levels to finish, and more graphics to integrate (there’s stuff setting on my iPad that’s needed imported for a while, I just keep forgetting to do it.)

But, that was the biggest hump.  I’m glad that’s over with! 🙂
